reading in bed 225x300 Passion for Books

For lovers of books, the variety of options Uptown are poised for wonderful expansion.   This weekend we have a special event when Indigo Arms hosts the Harlem Book Salon featuring Ntozake Shange and Ifa Bayeza, authors of the new novel, SOME SING, SOME CRY, for a reading and book signing on Sunday October 3rd at 3pm.  Indigo Arms is an intimate historic bed and breakfast located at 181 Lenox Avenue at 119th Street.

Hueman Book Store and Café has long been the literary heart of Harlem, a must-stop location for the compelling writers on national book tours.  Anticipation is now brewing for the creation of a book hub on Frederick Douglass Boulevard with the proposed addition of well-loved independent bookstore, Busboys and Poets.  A fixture on the Washington DC emerging urban landscape, I have spent many an afternoon and evening there catching up with friends when visiting the Capitol. It is only fitting for Busboys and Poets to have a place in Harlem, which is of course the place of origin of its “name”, which refers to American poet Langston Hughes, who worked as a busboy at the Wardman Park Hotel in the 1930s, prior to gaining recognition as a poet.  We hope they do come!

As fall comes sneaking in, time to get under a warm blanket with a good book. Enjoy!

Best,

Bea

readinginpark2 300x180 What’s Better than Summer and a Good Book! One of my commitments for this summer is to clear the pile of half-read books and crack open some new ones. On a recent “brief” vacation was happy to finish “Three Cups of Tea, One Man’s Mission to Promote Peace One School at a Time” – the story of Greg Mortenson’s work in Pakistan and Afganistan. So yes, this is as opportune a time as any to recommend a great book!

Continuing an annual tradition, the Harlem Book Fair 2010 will be presented from Saturday, July 17th through Monday, July 19th.  The fair kicks off on Saturday with a symposium at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture from 11am to 6pm, featuring a tribute to the outgoing Chief of the library, and a community treasure, Howard Dodson. Writers doing readings in the Courtyard include Terri McMillan and Sonia Sanchez. For a detailed schedule of events visit qbr.com.

Hope you find a new book that makes your summer even more memorable!

Best,

Bea
