Earlier this year we provided you with a round-up of some great Harlem yoga studios, which we’ve noticed are flourishing in the area. However, everyone is different when it comes to fitness, and if yoga isn’t your “thing,” consider these fitness options which are all conveniently located in the neighborhood.
Started by Kris Buxenbaum, Strivers Fitness is a private training studio located at 228 West 139th Street between 7th and 8th Avenues. Buxenbaum himself has a variety of training under his belt from dance to martial arts which has lead to his belief in a holistic approach to fitness. Harlem Capoeira Fitness is a community-based organization that has been in practice for almost a decade and offers classes at two different locations in Harlem, the Wadleigh Secondary School for Performing Arts at 215 West 114th Street and the Harlem YMCA at 180 West 135th Street. Capoeira is a Brazilian art form that combines elements of martial arts, sports, and music. It is known by quick and complex moves, using mainly power kicks and quick leg sweeps, with some ground and aerial acrobatics, knee strikes, take-downs, elbow strikes, punches and headbutts.
